A Hop, A Skype and a Jump to Windows 8.1

If you haven’t made the jump yet from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, what’re you waiting for? I call it a jump but really it’s more of a short hop. Your files, desktop applications, user accounts and settings will come with you and you can keep working while the update is taking place, so you can get the latest of Skype and Windows without fuss. If you’re already using Windows 8, it also won’t cost you a penny.

Updating to Windows 8.1 will also give you the best of Skype for modern Windows, from new ways to snap Skype to an improved experience when adding contacts. Windows 8.1 is also a requirement for new versions of Skype for modern Windows, so updating Windows also means you’ll always have access to the latest Skype experience.

Here are some tips to get you ready for the update and how to start it off.

Are you sure you’re not using Windows 8.1 already?

Before getting started, make sure you’re not already using Windows 8.1. To check your version of Windows, type PC Info on the Start screen to start search and select PC Info from the results.

If you don’t see PC info or you don’t have a Start screen, chances are you still need to get Windows 8.

Check you have all the necessary updates

You are probably getting automatic Windows updates already. However, in case you disabled automatic updates, you might need to perform a manual check before installing Windows 8.1.

To manually check for updates:

  1. Go to the Start screen and swipe in from the right or press Win+C to open the charms
  2. Select Settings > Change PC settings > Update and recovery
  3. Click or tap Check now

Backup the backup for your important files

Although your files and applications come with you when you update to Windows 8.1 it’s always a good idea to make a backup yourself. As the saying goes, you can never be too sure!

Download and install Windows 8.1 from the store

Once you’ve gone through these checks, downloading Windows 8.1 is as simple as opening up the Windows store.

Add Skype to your Start screen after the install
